What should I expect at a club meeting?
Monthly meetings typically include a brief report on club news and activities, some type of educational presentation or activity, show & tell, a raffle and auction, and refreshments and time to socialize with fellow club members. TLCC members can submit up to five items for auction at most meetings – see the TLCC auction form below.
What are the auction rules?
Auction regulations are covered in the club’s procedures and policies document (on the bylaws page). You should review these regulations before participating in the auction. But there’s nothing complicated – members can submit items (up to five as noted above), can set a minimum price, and there is no auction fee. Both members and guests can bid.
What items are most likely to sell?
Auctions are a popular feature of many coin clubs across the U.S. The most saleable items are typically low to mid-priced, are popular with collectors (such as many U.S. coins and some more interesting world coins, medals, etc.), and are accurately described and graded. The starting minimum bid should always be reasonable – below the full retail value. Items may be grouped together into lots, rolls of coins, etc., but be reasonable about that too – club members may not want a large lot if they’re only interested in one or two items in the lot.
Can I inspect lots?
Yes – items can be inspected at the auction table before the meeting starts (if items have already been placed) or during the meeting break before the auction. Asking to inspect items after the auction starts slows thing down and is discouraged.
How do I pay?
You should be prepared to promptly pay for any auctions you win in cash. The club treasurer will likely have some change available, but having small change yourself is a good idea. Any other forms of payment would normally require advance approval. Good luck with your bids!
